20 Ways to reflect on 2012

H
appy New Year’s Eve!

New Year's Eve is always a great day for reflection. A whole year has passed since the last one and this is the perfect opportunity to reflect on what has over the past year.

I found these 20 questions on another blog to help reflect the past 365 days and I thought I would share my answers with you.

20 Questions for a New Year’s Eve Reflection

1. What was the single best thing that happened this past year?
The single best thing that happened... Was.... Going to Georgia... It allowed me for such personal growth and made me into a better wife

2. What was the single most challenging thing that happened?
I finally got my big girl job: School Social Worker.. Each day looks completely different and I am always on a learning curve, which can be rewarding or frustrating.
3. What was an unexpected joy this past year?
An unexpected joy was purchasing my husbands car. .I didn't {plan} on buying a car by myself for him, but it worked out that way. This car should last us a long time with only 46k miles on it..  Get's great gas and is a super low payment.. Exactly what we need to get out debt..

4. What was an unexpected obstacle?
Student loan debt. Although we are $525 away from paying off another loan, we have struggled to keep paying more off because of many unexpected medical adventures.
5. Pick three words to describe 2012.
Challenging, unexpected, bucketfilling
6. Pick three words your spouse would use to describe your 2012—don’t ask them; guess based on how you think your spouse sees you. (If you’re not married, have fun guessing the answers from other friends and family, or just skip this question.)
My husband would describe my year as: challenging, frustrating and faithful.

7. Pick three words your spouse would use to describe their 2012—again, without asking.
Reward, overcoming and challenging.
8. What were the best books you read this year?
I've read a lot of books this year.. A couple of my favorites:
Soul Detox
Battlefield of the Mind
Miracles for Jen
Simple Secrets to a Happy Life
9. With whom were your most valuable relationships?
My friendships.

My relationship with my sister and mom.

My husband.

10. What was your biggest personal change from January to December of this past year?
Training for our Walt Disney World 2013 Marathon

11. In what way(s) did you grow emotionally?
I really challenged myself in such a mental way. I've had moments of break downs, tears of frustration because my ipod dies, my body is in so much pain or I just want to be done. I've pushed through all of those mental breakdowns.
12. In what way(s) did you grow spiritually?
I've had to trust God more, ask him for help when I am ready to give up.

14. In what way(s) did you grow in your relationships with others?
My marriage has grown a ton. Since my wonderful husband decided to take on the marathon challenge, he now has a completely different understanding of running. When I say I ran 10 miles, he gets it. He and I have had to work on our patience with one another.. As we have trained together on every long run, some long runs aren't are best runs, but we've had to encourage one another to go farther, run faster and stay strong.. Our communication has grown so much more.
15. What was the most enjoyable part of your work (both professionally and at home)?
Spending time building relationship with kids.. The best part..
16. What was the most challenging part of your work (both professionally and at home)?
The most challenging part is dealing with multiple personalities in co-workers who sometimes have a different approach.
17. What was your single biggest time waster in your life this past year?
Facebook.
18. What was the best way you used your time this past year?

Running. I've logged over 1000 miles this year!
19. What was biggest thing you learned this past year?
I am tougher than I think .
20. Create a phrase or statement that describes 2012 for you.
2012 has been a year that has challenged me both mentally and physically. While I've started a new job, I've trained for a marathon, learned the practice of Yoga and dealt with numerous health problems, I still continue to grow in my faith in God and trust that he will bring his good work in me to completion. 2012 will be the year that I see many seeds planted.

After Christmas Special

Have you been searching for the ONE decoration to complete your Christmas decorations?? My husband and I have been on a mission to find a Christmas tree topper..

Do you know how hard it is to find one that is decent????

Each year we have looked for one, I have either found the angels to be ugly or scary. The star toppers are multi-colored or are made cheaply. When we find one and purchase it, we then realize it is battery operated and therefore, must be returned.. Battery operated is no good! Who wants to keep reaching to the top of the tree to turn on the topper?? Not to mention all the cost in batteries..

This year, we were on a mission to find the perfect Christmas topper.. I didn't think it was going to happen...

Then.. we got a phone call from a couple we babysit who asked us to stop by on Christmas Eve.. They had a gift they wanted to give us.. Once we were over there, we began talking about tree toppers.. I just loved their Angel.. Shirley told me they purchased their tree topper at Macy's..

I told Drew, after church we are going to stop by Macy's before our annual Christmas Eve party at my parents house.. When we left church and got to Macy's, they had just closed!!!!
We missed their closing by 7 minutes.. I was bummed and new I would not be able to find an Angel..

Drew and I decided on Christmas night that we would get up early the day after Christmas to see if we could find a tree topper..

We headed over to Macy's bright and early.. To our surprise, we found a tree topper on top of a display model.

Drew guarded the tree, while I went to get a store employee to help.. I am sure glad we got up early for our angel.. An employee came over and took it down for us.. He informed us it was 75% off and that made me more excited..

Except....

We went to the cash register and it rang up $90.00.. WHAT!??
I thought it was 75% off? The sales woman proceeded to tell us that it was still ringing up normal price and I informed her about what the sales man who took it off the tree said about it being 75% off..

I thought for sure it wasn't going to happen..

The saleswoman called a manager who said it was okay to give it to us 75% off.. {insert sigh of relief} She was only $22...

Our search for the perfect tree topper is over...

What has been the one Christmas decoration you have searched for??

Christmas Day w/ Smith's

I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas and celebrated with loved ones, while making life long memories.

Christmas mid-morning, we go to the Smith household to celebrate Christmas with my brother and sister.

My sister is 16 and I don't think she should have to wait all that time to open her Christmas gifts.. Once she is older and in college, Fine, but not now.. I remember being a teenager and wanting to call all of my friends to hear about their Christmas..

Do you think we look alike???
A lot of people think we do.. Often, they think she is older than me..

My husband and I before all the presents are torn open at my parents house! Aren't we so excited???

These two totally act like brother and sister.. Look at their silly faces.. They're a bunch of goofballs who always make me laugh..

The Fab three girls!!! Finally, Mom got a smile in.. Usually, her eyes are blinking or she isn't smiling.. My hair is a bit crazy, but I'll take it!!

My brother asked my mom a few weeks ago, "What does Dad want for Christmas??"  When my mom talked to my dad, he said, "a pet rock." My brother made him a pet rock for Christmas! So funny! Be careful what you wish for :)

I'm pretty sure my Dad was not expecting a pet rock for Christmas..

All in all, we had a good time laughing, eating and spending time with each other. Although gifts are great, the best gift is the birth of Jesus. Hope you all had a wonderful Christmas.

We spend the second part of the day with the Storm family.. More to come...

Merry Christmas!!

Christmas Eve Traditions

I hope all of you had a wonderful and relaxing Christmas. I have the pleasure of having my husband home and we have enjoyed it so much. Working for the news industry, his job never stops!

On Christmas Eve or Christmas Day, our tradition is to attend church. It depends on what day our church decides to hold service. This year, it was on Christmas Eve and what a beautiful service it was. I was very much reminded of the HOPE that Christmas brings. I pray this Christmas season brought HOPE in your life.

(This is a picture of our beautiful sanctuary during Christmas Eve Services)

Ever since I can remember, we have always had a Christmas Eve party with my mom's side of the family. I look forward to this tradition every year. My my mom makes the best holiday punch and serves it in her elegant punch bowl. I can't wait to dig into my Grandma's Lemon Pie and my Aunt's gingerbread cookies.. It is fantastic! My waistline isn't usually happy afterwards, but I really enjoy it.

Ever since my Grandpa moved from LasVegas, he has also joined in on the family festivities.. It was great to see him and my Grandma, even though they divorced years ago.. It's always good to see them together.

My Grandpa isn't doing good. He definitely has the onset of Alzheimer's Disease and can barely remember my mom, let alone the rest of us Grandchildren. Each year that he visits for Christmas, I am reminded of how beautiful life is.  Although his health declines every year, his smile remains the same.

This year he was very exhausted and wasn't very alert during our party. I was glad his presence was with us, but I knew he was not the same person from a year ago.

As his health and body deteriorates, I am reminded that God did not plan for our earthly bodies to last forever, but for our spirits to last eternally. Although I am sad to see his body decline, I am hopeful that he will not be held captive to it much longer.

I am thankful for another Christmas Eve with him and the rest of my family. I love that this tradition stands still every year and I look forward to it continuing for years to come.

What are your Christmas Eve traditions?

Calling all dreamers...

Ever since I can remember, I've been a dreamer! My obsession with Disney isn't by accident. I've always been a goal oriented person who believes one can achieve whatever they set their mind too..

The dreams that I have always had for my life, have recently been fulfilled. I got a school social work job this year, my husband and I are running our first marathon in January. My so-called life dreams are coming to pass..

Now my dreams are paying off our student loan debt, purchasing a house and starting a family..
Are these my dreams or Gods?

When I heard that Holley Gerth was asking for applicants for women who wanted to be part of her "dream team", I applied not expecting anything, but hoping. I was selected to be one of the dreamers along with 99 other courageous women.

When I started the application, I told Holley that I wasn't sure what my dream was. My entire life I had been working towards achieving something, but now I am not sure what my dream is.. I have goals, but are they dreams? What are God's dreams for my life? I'm not sure.

Although I don't where this adventure is to take me, I am ecstatic to see how God is going to use me and these beautiful women for his kingdom. I am excited to see the opportunities and doors he will open into discovering his dream for my life.

Keep checking back to see me as I embark on a journey of a lifetime. I am beyond thrilled to discover my God size Dream. Are you thinking you want to start this journey too? Why not say "yes"!!

As 2013 approaches us, would you commit yourself to discovering a dream that God has placed in your heart? It can be something small or life changing. Discover the inner dreamer in you.

Let's get dreaming and watch as God shows himself. Blessings, dear friends!

What Dream has been buried in your heart? What is 1 small step you can take today to make it come alive?

Echoes- Book Review

If you have not read a Robin Jones Gunn book, you're missing out! These books are great! One of the best series she has written is called The Glenbrooke Series. The Glenbrooke series is about this town of different people and how their story aligns in some fashion or another.

"Echoes" is the 3rd book in this series. I have read all of these books and have loved them. At the chance to read it again, I was all in! In this book we meet Lauren Phillips, a woman who was engaged and ready to start her life with Jeff. When Jeff gets a promotion that leads him to a job in New York, Lauren isn't sure she can go. Jeff decides he cannot marry Lauren and moves to New York.

Lauren is devestated and has to slowly begin to rebuild her life. With the helps of her brother, she begins using the computer, which leads her to talking with a mysterious man, who of course turns to be a love interest. Does she meet K.C and do the sparks fly? You'll have to read if for yourself.

Echoes (Glenbrooke #3)

I love Robin Jones Gunn books because you can always expect a light heart read and to draw closer to God. Her books are not just fluff, but God works through all of her characters. I can relate to her stories and style of writing. Her books are fluid and a great read!

Thanks to Waterbook Publishing for allowing me to review this book. I was not compensated for a positive review.

Faith to move a Mountain.

Are you tired of looking for a job? Are you constantly fighting each day to search, sending your resume, getting interviews, but nothing panning?

Are you exhausted?

Is a loved one going through a horrific disease? You begin to ask, why God?

Have you recently lost a loved one? God, why would you allow this happen?

Are you struggling to get out bed each day? Do wonder where God is ?

Are you searching for a mate, but never finding the right one?

Dear Dream sisters, are you struggling to find HIS faithfulness in all of your life struggles and situations?  Do you wonder does he really know me by name? Why is all of this so hard if God is so good??

I've been in that season
Waiting.
Wondering.
 Crying.
Pouring my soul into finding God.
Where are you??
Why me???
Doubting.

{Let me share my story of questioning and doubting a wonderful creator who is always FAITHFUL, even when we don't feel, see or understand his MYSTERIOUS ways!}

You just walked down the aisle in a beautiful, white, wedding gown promising your life to a man  who you think is God's best!! You've waited for this moment since High School.
You've done everything right..
 staying abstinent
followed God's leading
 honored your parents.

Fast Forward to the first 3 months of your marriage, your first week at your new job to have your husband receive a phone call saying- "Your wife has passed out several times, you probably should come pick her up and take her to the hospital. She regained consciousness fast, but we are concerned. "

Fast Forward another two months later: No answers from any doctors.  "Drew!" "It's happening again." Within a split second of yelling for my husband, I fell down in the bathtub. For seconds I could hear him yelling at me, but I couldn't respond. He kept yelling my name and when I was able to talk to him I said "Stop yelling at me, you're scaring me."  "Sarah do you know what happened? I looked around and slowly began to realize I was in the bathtub, my husband hair was wet, as were his clothes. "I don't remember", I said.

" You passed out again, we have to get you to the hospital."

"What! They did nothing last time. They diagnosed with a Urinary Tract Infection! You honestly think they will figured this out! Heck no! We cannot afford another hospital trip.. The ER is too expensive and we cannot afford it. I'm not going...

Christmas is coming, we can't do this again."

As we rung in 2011, we had no idea what the year would bring.

Our patience was tested.
Our strength as a newly wed couple was held on by a thread.
Our fiances completely broke.
Everything we knew to be true about God, was shattered.
Our faith was shaken.
We were at some very low points.

After almost 1 full year of medical testing, physical and emotional endurance, we got our answers. It came the week before we were to celebrate our 1st Anniversary at Walt Disney World.

Epilepsy

This diagnosis made me question everything.
I questioned my faith.
my purpose.
the creator of the world.

What do you mean I have EPILEPSY?

And then more questions:
Am I going to lose my drivers license?
Am I going to be able to work?
Will I be able to have kids?
How can we afford this?
Will I ever be able to run again?
Where are you God? Why have you allowed this to happen????

God, I am {PISSED} at you!!! Why me? Don't you know I went in Social Work to serve people? Don't you know that I love running? Don't you know that I am stubborn? Do you realize how independent I am? Do you know WHO  I am?? Why did you allow this to happen to me??  My life is RUINED!

Obviously, God knew what he was doing, I just didn't.

As I began to ask the scary questions..

God began to slowly show up.
He began to become present in my life.
I began to seek Him.
He did not leave me, He did not forsake me.
He knew what He was doing.
Despite my inability to see what was going on, God remained patient with me through my humanly doubt.
He was holding my hand the entire process, even though I never felt it.
He is good, even in the messy of life, I just didn't feel it.

It was one night at church, I made a decision to get prayed for. I am not the person who will ask for anything. I am not good at taking care of myself or my needs. Asking for prayer, was very humbling. In those moments of being prayed for, I knew the chains were breaking off my body. I felt healed.  Not just physically, but spiritually and emotionally. I felt God's presence in that moment. God showed himself to me.

After this evening...
I began to wonder, could I run again?
Could I do this without getting hurt?
Am I really healed
Was it just in my head?

God healed me, but in my human brain, I needed to know... Why as humans we question God? I just think as humans we don't understand the greatness of God.  I began to slowly test my bodies endurance and response to running..

This past May, I finished a 25k (15.5 mile) run! God showed up. I woke up race morning with no voice, realizing this wasn't going to be good, but knowing that God did not bring me through all the training to leave me..

God brought me through every mile!

I finished 15 minutes faster than two years previous the EPILEPSY!

And then a couple weeks later, I felt God speaking to my heart... Remember that Walt Disney World marathon you've had your heart set on? Go run it! You've got this. After sitting on the thought for a couple of weeks, I asked my husband if he would be willing to do it with me or willing to go.. He jumped immediately and said he would train with me..

My husband was not a runner. He just committed to running a full marathon! What? He can't even run a MILE!

Over the summer, we began slowly training and picked it up this fall. God has been faithful every step of the way.

As the mileage increased, the doubt came in, telling me I would never finish training.
The voice kept telling me I couldn't do this!
It kept trying to press me down.

God's faithfulness trumped. On every long run, (I'm talking like 16 or 18 mile runs) God showed us His faithfulness by providing perfect weather. Not a snowflake has hit the ground on our long runs, which is unusual for Michigan.

Not a seizure has happened.

Despite the grueling energy and dehydration a body can go through during marathon training, God has kept me in 1 piece! Numerous medical craziness has happened along the way and GOD still has provided me the body to keep moving forward.

It's Him!
It has nothing to do with me.

Yesterday, we completed our last 18 mile run before our taper!

We will be running the WDW MARATHON in January!!
The glory is not mine, but God's.
He is so FAITHFUL!!
If our faith is as a tiny as a MUSTARD seed, He will MOVE our Mountain!

He has moved the mountain in my life!

This year at Christmas, I invite you to look at your life and find the places where God has shown up.
Maybe you can't find Him?
Rest assure my sisters, He is there.
He is holding your hand.
He will remain faithful.
He will bring you out of this season of life.
He has a plan.
His plan is better than yours!
Keep seeking Him.
He will move the MOUNTAIN!
Hold on to your faith!

Matthew 17:20
I tell you the truth, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, 'Move from here to there' and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you."

Question: Where has God shown up? What area of your life are you expecting God to deliver you from? Can I pray for you???

Christmas Stories

Max Lucado is one of my favorite authors as he is always inspiring, encouraging and challenges me towards all things God.

Christmas Stories: Heartwarming Classics of Angels, a Manger, and the Birth of Hope

This book is filled with different Christmas stories celebrating the joy of the season. Some of these titles have been previously published, but are worth another look or a gentle reminder. The Christmas Candle is a story of forgiveness and miracles. When the candle is lost, who will receive it? The Christmas Child is my favorite. This is a story of family, faith and forgiveness as a family is torn apart due to the loss of a life. Will forgiveness trump pain? North Pole of the Manger? This story invites the reader to understand the story of Jesus and how Santa isn't real, but how and where we should seek our heavenly gifts.  This book contains so many more stories.. Those are just a few of the ones I enjoyed.. This book does not have to be read cover to cover, but just as one wishes to pick it up and read here or there.
If you have not read a book by Max Lucado, I invite you to take a moment and read one of his books.. You're life will be changed as you read the words of a man who can eloquently lead a person to Christ.
Thank you Thomas Nelson for allowing to me read a wonderful book.

Holiday Titles for your Reader

I would love a Kindle or Ipad, but our budget doesn't have the dollars to match the want.  Since I don't have an e-reader, I still read books, which I don't think is a bad thing.. There is something wonderful about holding a physical book. .The problem I am running into is, I simply do not have enough book shelf space for all of my books.. I am going to need to address this dilemma soon...

Anyways, I was provided the opportunity to read and review 4 Christmas novels by a publishing company named Summerside Press.

All of these books are fantastic in their own way.. So this blog post isn't forever long, I am going to try and make each snip-it short.

Sleigh Bells:
Janice Hanna

Sleigh Belles: Belles and Whistles

Sleigh Belles is a cute little romantic novel about Alanna Lessing who goes on a mission to help rescue her sister from the women's suffrage movement. Upon arriving in Montana, Alanna finds herself helping the neighbor rancher, Tanner Jacobs. Tanner Jacobs begins to develop feelings for Alanna and wants to be apart of her life. Will sparks fly or is this a disaster for love?

My opinion: This book is cute book for those who like historical romance fiction. Although historical romance fiction isn't my favorite, I enjoyed this book.. It is a quick read and it's a good "fluff" read from life.. Sometimes you just need to transport yourself into someone elses world and this book will help you do that!

Baby It's Cold Outside:
Susan May Warren

Baby, It's Cold Outside
Dottie, a local librarian has grieved the loss of her son in World War 2. When Christmas approaches, Dottie has no energy to open up her house or heart for Christmas. She is not excited for the season and is still dealing with her loss.. Her hometown Christmas tree usually has a star on it, but since the death of Dotties Son, Dottie cannot part with the star for the Christmas town tree. In the spirit of Christmas, 5 visitors show up as a result of a massive blizzard. Will one of these visitors convince her to put her sons star up on the town Christmas tree? Will any of these visitors change her life???
My opinion: I think this book would be a great movie. It reminded me of "Its a Wonderful Life" and how bad things all work together for good. I really enjoyed this book, it was a great read!!. Reading it made me feel very cozy, especially with all the description of the snow.. This would be a great read around the fire place.
A Merry Little Christmas:
Anita Higman

A Merry Little Christmas: Songs of the Season

This cute little Christmas novel is sure to stir your heart this Christmas! Franny has always lived on her parents farm and has taken care of it since their passing. She has dreamed of getting out of her parent's home and moving to city. A man approaches her and asks if he can purchase the farm. As Franny gets aquinated with Charlie, she begins to have feelings for him. As this story unfolds, does Franny sell the farm and live out her dream or does God have bigger plans for her life??

My opinion:
Anita Higman did a great job writing this cute novel. It is one of those homey cute, cozy  books that makes you feel good. This is a great holiday read for your favorite reader! This is perfect for your book reader who loves simple, fun and cozy holiday romance novels!

I'll be Home For Christmas:
Julie L. Cannon

I'll Be Home for Christmas

As Maggie grieves the death of her mother, her childhood sweetheart, William Dove proposes to Maggie. Maggie was completely taken off guard by Williams gesture and decided to enlist herself in the U.S Navy Waves ( Women Accepted For Voluntary Emergency Services). She gets stationed in New Jersey. Unfortunately, William cannot serve in the military due to a childhood illness of Polio, William is unable to serve along side Maggie. Will Maggie find love after all with William? Will she able to grieve the loss of her mother?

My oponion:
This is my favorite book. I love the whole William going after Maggie.. I think it is so romantic.. This was my favorite out all these books.

Well, I hope this gives you a good preview of some great holiday titles for your favorite reader! May you find a little Holiday spirit in each book!
Thank you Summerside Press for allowing me to review these cute novels.
