Blankets and .2 lbs loss, Goodbyes

I have a lot to write about this evening.

First, I will talk about the goodbyes my husband and I had to say this weekend. Our pastor, friend and individual who married us is moving to New York. He recieved another job offer to pastor a church and took the call. We are very excited to see how God is going to use him, but very sad that he will no longer be in michigan.

Will miss babysitting these kiddos and watching them grow up! Thankyou for being a blessing in our lives! We wish you the best!!

Yesterday, Drew and I recieved this wonderful blanket made by our dear friend, Andrea! I was so excited and blessed to recieve such a wonderful gift! Cannot wait to snuggle with it this evening! It is so cute! Love the patterns! I have such good friends!
Weigh in- I was shocked today when I found out, I lost .2 of a 1lb. I was floored. I thought for sure that I had gained weight, especially from this crazy week. I was pretty excited and it kept me encouraged to continue to eat healthy, workout and try to learn more about how to be a healthier individual.

Apoliges, 3lbs skinner

Fellow bloggers,
I apologize for not being as active on my blog this week as I had hoped. This week was crazy nuts.
First, let me say, I dropped 3lbs this week. However, I feel as though I may have gained it back and then some.. This week was crazy stressful..

Drew's grandmother had a surgery last friday with her bowl, but had complications, so on Tuesday this week, she was scheduled for an Emergency High Risk Surgery. We were up pretty late on tuesday night and found out Wednesday that she never became conscious after surgery. She had some complications as a result of the surgery, so she was put on life support. Least to say, this has been one of the busiest weeks between working both jobs and spending time at the hospital..

I have been eating a lot of crap this week, especially since I have been on the go.. I dont expect a loss this week and that is okay..  I am praying I didnt gain, but I have a feeling that I did.. Wont know till tuesday... Oh, well!

Health, Wisdom, Weight

Health Update:

Ultra sound came back from my thyroid, my benign tumor has grown. The next step is to see a specialist, this may be causing the continual dizziness, but we won't know until it is removed. Possible surgery needed at some point, not really sure what the specialist will say.. Time will tell the story about this ordeal..

Friday, I had my wisdom teeth removed.. We found out afterwards, my bottom wisdom teeth were infected.. Wonderful eh? Anyways, I have spent the weekend relaxing, watching tv, eating pudding and lots of smoothies. My good friend Kels came over and kept me company for a while yesterday! Love that girlie! It was nice to catch up with her.

As far as the weight loss journey, I think I may have lost a couple of pounds due to the lack of eating. I never realized how much we use our back teeth to chew. I will find out Tuesday during our weigh in.

One thing I am learning about eating, losing weight and exercising is that the body needs 8-10 hours of sleep each night in order to lose weight. The reason is due hormones that are repairing our bodies. Also, the longer we stay awake, the more apt we are to eat food that our body doesn't need. Very interesting.

Avi & Leslie

Thursday evening, I had the privledge of photographing Avi and Leslie. Both of them are full of laughter and fun! Both unique individuals with a love for one another. We had a great session, with beautiful fall weather. Here is a sample of my favorite shots!

First Weigh In

Today was my first weigh-in. Since the wedding, I have put on at least 15 pounds. I blame it on eating crappy due to my jobs. Working at school, you have to come up with meals that can go in the fride, that wont spoil or taste terrible by the time you get there. Then I work a nanny job in the evening and let's be honest, I sometimes just grab whatever ins convient at home before I head on out.  Working two jobs is tiring and then trying to fit in eating healthy and exercising on a normal basis.. It is nuts, but I am ready to be skinny.

The weigh-in today was to give us a starting point. Surprisely, I havent gained anything since last week, which is good. So, hopefully, I am ready to start losing.

Exercise: 3 mile run, 1mile walk

Daily tip: To lose weight, keep a food journal, write down everything. It will force you to see what times of the day you struggle with food.. I struggle with eating at night. I love snack food. I need to get better at healthier options.
Another tip: Eat gum or drink water when you feel hungry. Right now, I am chewing gum because it is too late to eat.

What I'm Learning: When I am bored, I head to the fridge. I am also learning that a lot of social events I attend, have unhealthy food choices. I am starting to think very consciously about the type of social events I attend with food.

Temptations: The brownies I baked Drew this weekend.. They look and smell so yummy. I am learning that eating sweets is okay, just not when you are trying to lose weight. Everything needs to be done in moderation..

I will keep posting..

Pumpkins

I must say, I do love fall. I love the crisp autumn air, the delicious taste of warm cider and the sugary sentation candy corn leaves in your mouth. Yesterday, we celebrated the beauty of fall by going to Wells Apple Orchard! It is so fun being married. We get to celebrate a lot of "firsts" together.
The Pumpkin Patch was filled with a variety of pumpkins ranging in weight, shape, size and color.

Drew felt bad for this green, rejected pumpkin that looked kinda cute. This evening I am excited to watch " The Great Pumkin" Charlie Brown. I love Charlie Brown...

Is this one okay?

These are the two baby pumkins we chose. Cannot wait to carve the little guys into something special. Will post carving pictures as October continues! For now, going to enjoy some warm cider and the fall weather!

What I'm Learning about the Food Industry

The more I continue my study on health and the food industry, the more sickened I am.

Did you know?

Canned Pineapple can contain up to 20 percent moldy fruits!

Canned tomatoes can contain 5 fly eggs or 2maggots per 500 grams!
Frozen Broccoli can contain 60mites per 100 grams!

Peanut butter can cotain 30 insect fragments or 1 rodent hair per 100 grams!

Popcorn can contain 1 rodent pellet!

Potato Chips can contain 6 percent rotten potatoes!

Did you also know that Companies must pay to be an American Certified Heart Associated Certified food? (AHA) Some companies say the product is certifed, but this isn't true!

Did you also know that leaner cuts of turkey, chicken and beef prodcuts have the highest sodium levels? This is because they use water, salt and other nutrients to help preserve the meat. You think by purchasing leaner cuts of these items, you are being healthier, but that isnt alway the case.

This news makes me very frustrated! I will keep you updated on the more food research and I continue my investigation in understanding the food industry.

Day 1

I am doing to do my best and try to be faithful about documenting my weight loss journey. Thank you all who commented on my last post. I appreciate all of you and your encouragement.

Exercise: 3 mile walk

Diet: Lunch- Low Calorie Bread (40 calories per slice), Turkey (50 Calories per 5 slices), Lettuce and Peach Mango Salsa.. Yes, I put Peach Mango Salsa on my sandwich and it was so yummy. I am trying out new things, because I love MAYO on my sandwiches. The salsa was fat free and 0 calories! Water and Weight Watchers Yogurt.

Dinner- I struggle with dinner, no one is here and I feel like eating nothing or junk. I had a toasted piece of bread(35calories) with Roasted Red Pepper Hummus. It was yummy! I am trying to get away from having butter on my bread.
However, I did eat a good amount of Tortilla chips with my Roasted Red Pepper Hummus, so I think today is a wash.

Daily tip: Eat 5-6 small meals daily. You wont crave bad food as much and wont over eat either!

What I'm Learning: I am learning to be conscious of everything I put into my mouth. I don't expect to get this right on  the first week. I think for the next couple of weeks I will struggle with what to eat, how to eat, when to eat it and what is the most nutritious. It will take time, but I will keep posting.

Temptations: At school, one of our teachers made a dessert and I had time passing it up because I did not want to hurt his feelings. This instance made me realize that sometimes I do things for people that I don't really want to do. I didn't want the dessert, but I felt guilty. I did not take a piece of dessert despite the guilt I felt.

Homecoming 2010

My baby sister is no longer a baby. She is now a beautiful young woman who is a Freshman at Grandville High School. She had her first highschool dance this weekend, "Homecoming". I cannot believe that she is old enough to be in highschool and soon she will enter the dating world.. Time flies by! Love that kid!

Art is the eye of the beholder

Drew has been begging me to to head down to Art Prize the last two weeks. Now, if you are not familiar with ArtPrize, it is a place where artists can display their art work in Grand Rapids, Michigan in hopes of winning a quarter of a million dollars. To find out more info, check out http://www.artprize.org/

For starters, this penny is actually made of 84,000 pennies. The details are amazing. The woman who made this penny is a single mother, who worked 12-14hr days on this piece. Her two children glued the last two pennies on. In order for this piece to be as a cool as it is, she needed just the right shades of pennies too.. It was a stunning piece.. This picture doesnt do justice to this amazing piece.

Water Prize was created by some individuals at Mars Hill Church. Waterprize is on a mission to provide resources and attention to the number one problem of today, the global lack of clean water. Approximately 1 out of every 6 people do not have access to clean, safe drinking water. This is not Okay. In a creative, compelling, fun way Waterprize exists to provide attention and resources for those in need. Personally, I loved this piece and the attention it was recieving.

This was a picture I took of downtown Grand Rapids... Beautiful fall afternoon.

This piece entitled "A Matter of Time" is an extradionary piece of artwork. This sculpture, 13 feet in diameter, "A Matter Of Time" explores man's relationship to the earth. Think of this sculpture as a clock. At the 12:00 hour is bird life, representing the sky. At 3:00 and 9:00 are mammals, representing the land. Working downwards toward the 6:00 hour, through reptiles, amphibians, fish and crustaceans we arrive at the sea turtle that represents the oceans. Man's position is the timepiece, holding the fate of the planet in his hand.

"Calvary"- A 300 ft pencil drawing done by a #2 ! Amazing. The picture does not do justice to this detailed drawing.  It covers a 30 foot wall! Imagine that? Amazing!

These pieces are a few of very amazing, talents art-work and I am so blessed to live in Grand Rapids where we can freely enjoy the beauty of Art. It was a great day!
